“Architecture is Listening”JN
Jean Nouvel born 12.08.1945 Fumel, France. Nouvel has been the recipient of a number of prestigious distinctions over the course of his career, including the Aga Kahn Award for Architecture in 1989, the prize was awarded at the opening of the Arab World Institute in 1987.
His design revealed a new kind of modernism, one which was alive with kinetic energy, apertures which opened and closed, changing configurations which were intimately responsive to light and weather.
He continued to explore the margins of science and metaphor in projects like the Golden Angel in Prague in 2000, the Wolf Prize in Arts in 2005, the Torre Agbar skyscraper in Barcelona in 2005, the Prize in 2008, the One New Change in London in 2010 and the Doha Tower in Qatar 2012.
Jean Nouvel’s attributes, to mention only a few, is his persistence, imagination, exuberance and above all, an insatiable urge for creative experimentation.
His international influence was further established with the Montpellier City Hall (France), Hôtel Sofitel in Vienna (Austria), Hotel Renaissance in Barcelona (Spain), Tour White Walls in Nicosia (Cyprus) and One Central Park in Sydney (Australia) which was awarded CTBUH Best Tall Building 2014.
“Architecture is a mixture of nostalgia and extreme anticipation” Nouvel recites Jean Baudrillard. Nouvel designs focus on the connection between parameters such as: era, culture, history and geometry.
We live and exist in a given time where we are exposed to the influence of different civilizations and technologies.
Much focus has been placed on the Middle East where Jean Nouvel has designed iconic structures taking the history and geographical legacy into account. He has carefully considered the unique connection to the desert, the sea, religion and general culture.
“It’s always a fitting and unique answer which bears witness, culturally and technically, to our times and to our civilization.” JN
You will not be able to instantly identify Jean Nouvel’s work, he has no particular signature move or logo, however each building resonates with a meticulous attention to detail, sense of dedication for the location and culture, the desire of high environmental quality and very particular attention to craftsmanship. Nouvel prides himself on implementing the wishes of his client, linking inventions and imports to his own story filtered by the influences of the location of the building, no two of his buildings are alike.
Cutting-edge technology merged with ancient forms of geometry, history and pattern making, and always using sense and sensitivity attributes, established Nouvel as a unique and famous Architect.
‘It’s always a fitting and unique answer which bears witness, culturally and technically, to our times and to our civilization.” JN
